Welcome to The Anchor

The Anchor in Danbury is the epitome of an English Country Inn, boasting traditional beams, quaint shining brass and a warm welcoming atmosphere which has made this pub a firm favourite for many years.

Situated in the pretty village of Danbury, you will find The Anchor in Runsell Green set just off the A414.
Originally three cottages, the building first became a pub in 1830 when the licence was transferred from the now derelict building just across the road.

After recently undergoing a refurbishment, The Anchor is now presented to the highest standard maintaining the warm traditional character it has always been renowned for. The spacious main bar area features all the comforts of olde world charm, with an open fire in the winter, with plush carpeting, and solid oak exposed beams, which to this day still show signs of scorch marks made by reed torches used over 300 years ago.
Look around and you will find many other tell tale features which confirm the age of this wonderful old
building. The smaller bar has been designed as a cosy snug where you can relax in comfortable easy chairs and enjoy another open fire during the colder months. Regulars will recognise the rather ‘large pike’ still taking pride of place on the main wall! Leading off from the main bar is the pretty, airy conservatory overlooking farmland, where some days you may be lucky to catch sight of a herd of Roe Deer or a brood of pheasants.

Resident ghost ‘Tom’ - believed to be a gentleman who drowned in the pond at the top of the road after
leaving The Anchor one evening, rather inebriated – occasionally plays tricks by unlocking doors, switching the radio on in the bar in the middle of the night and on several occasions has been heard running across the floor in the flat upstairs!

The Anchor is a member of the prestigious Head Brewers Club and provide a comprehensive range of top brand lagers and three different ales which are always in prime condition. The varied, mouth watering menus offer a wide selection of dishes which are all home-made on the premises using the finest locally sourced products. The main menus are supplemented each day by the ‘Daily Specials Board’ which is updated regularly.

Owners Shirley and Malcolm extend a warm welcome and invite you the enjoy the comfortable and friendly atmosphere and professional service at The Anchor pub, which is set in beautiful countryside with many nearby country walks, Danbury Country Park and is within close proximity and also the riverside town of Maldon.
